Gig Harbor is a Quality Heating Port-of-Call

Gig Harbor, the “Maritime City”

During the last few days of the historic heat wave that swept over the Pacific Northwest in June, 2021, Gig Harbor’s citizens pulled together to open a cooling center for residents without air conditioning. It is this same kind of community initiative and resourcefulness that have helped this bucolic, waterfront city meet historic challenges and become one of the jewels of our region.

The first bridge connecting this southern gateway to the Olympic Peninsula from Tacoma collapsed just months after it was erected over the Narrows. Before the second bridge was completed, a “Mosquito Fleet” of state-run ferries delivered drivers directly into downtown Gig Harbor. Remains of the ferry dock can still be seen just outside the mouth of the harbor at the southeast end of Harborview Drive. The area has been turned into a small park, where the public can take in a panoramic view of the Cascade Mountains, Point Defiance, and Mount Rainier.

Today’s Gig Harbor is a very active place for tourists with shopping, dining, and recreation on every block.
